Strategic proposal · Prepared September 28, 2026 · Based on public reporting Staying relevant in the AI payments stack Unstoppable Domains will not become the address book for machine-to-machine payments. It can still build a durable business around them by moving from the payment path to the trust, verification and operations layers next to it. Executive summary Agent payments are consolidating around a small set of open standards: x402 for pay-per-request stablecoin settlement, and ERC-8004 for on-chain agent identity, reputation and payment-wallet lookup. These standards resolve the "who do I pay" question without a human-readable name. Meanwhile, Unstoppable has been moving its own resources toward traditional DNS and AI tooling. Competing head-on for the naming layer of machine payments is therefore a losing position. We recommend five initiatives that use Unstoppable's real strengths (registrar operations, domain data, DNS distribution, AI tooling) and attach them to the standards that are already winning, rather than to a competing one. Where things stand Founder Matt Gould said in March 2026 that conventional DNS domains account for more than 90% of the company's business, and that web3-only names did not cross into mainstream use. In August 2026 the company dropped plans to apply for its own web3-linked TLDs, including .crypto, .wallet, .NFT and .Bitcoin, citing compliance and bidding costs and an ICANN integration framework it found unworkable. Refunds have followed, with some disputes from holders. unstoppabledomains.com now redirects to unstoppable.ai, and the company describes its direction in terms of AI agents and an agentic workspace. Existing web3 domains remain as on-chain assets. ERC-8004 already stores an agent's payment wallet on-chain, proven by a signature from that wallet. ENS is among the projects that have publicly committed to integrations. x402, co-developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare, is reported to have processed more than 100 million payments in its first six months. Unstoppable is brokering .agent (with Sentient Foundation) and .agi. New TLDs from the current ICANN round are expected to reach the market only after 2030. Machines need an unambiguous identifier and a policy. They do not need a memorable name. People who supervise them do. Five initiatives, in priority order 1 Integrate with ERC-8004 and x402 instead of competing with them Position Unstoppable names as a human-readable label and verification anchor for agents that are registered in the standard registries. What Open-source resolver plugin that maps a name to an agent ID and wallet, then checks it against the registry's signed wallet record. Reference integration with Circle Wallets and an x402 client. Support for the .well-known/agent-registration.json domain-verification pattern. Why Adoption follows the standards. A plugin that makes a name useful inside them is the only realistic entry point. First proof A working end-to-end demo: name in, verified wallet out, USDC payment settled. Risk Medium Developers may still prefer raw registry lookups. 2 Turn .agent and .agi into a domain-based proof of agent ownership DNS already works with browsers, corporate firewalls and payment-provider compliance checks. Sell that compatibility. What A product where a company proves it operates an agent by controlling a DNS domain, and links that domain to the agent's on-chain registration. Registrar-grade dispute handling and contact verification are part of the offer. Why Enterprises and regulated counterparties trust DNS ownership more than a wallet alone, and this is what Unstoppable's accredited-registrar business already does well. Constraint New TLDs arrive after 2030, so the product must launch first on existing extensions such as .com and .ai. Risk Medium Timing and dependence on ICANN's schedule. 3 Sell fleet operations for organizations running many agents Charge for the work around payments, not the payment itself. What Managed domains, DNS, email, landing pages and trust indicators for every agent a company deploys, with bulk provisioning through an API and policy templates for spending limits. Why It builds on AI agents, site builders and email tooling that already exist in the product line, and customers already pay for this category. Risk Lower Crowded market, but the company has distribution. 4 Offer domain history as an input to agent reputation Data that took years to accumulate is hard for a new protocol to copy. What An API that returns domain age, ownership changes, abuse reports and registrar-level signals for use in agent reputation and risk scoring, including feeds into on-chain reputation registries. Why Reputation systems need external evidence. Registrars hold it. Risk Medium Privacy and regulatory review of what can be shared. 5 Protect existing web3 domain holders Trust is the precondition for every partnership above. Recent refund disputes have put it at risk. What A public commitment to maintain resolvers and respond to vulnerabilities, a clear refund and communication process, and a documented path for holders who want to move names to another registry. Why Partners and developers will not integrate with a project they expect to be abandoned. Risk Lower The cost is modest compared with the reputational downside. What to avoid Overstated claims. "Permanent ownership secures the machine economy" is not technically persuasive. A domain proves ownership of a name, not that a device is genuine, and it does not remove resolver or key-compromise risk. A proprietary payment protocol or stablecoin. Circle, Coinbase and the ERC-8004 ecosystem have far more resources and adoption. Mixed messages. Leaving the web3 business unmaintained while marketing an AI-payments story will cost credibility on both sides. 36-month roadmap Phase Focus Exit signal Months 0–6 Holder-protection commitments (5). Outlook These are subjective estimates for the next three years, not forecasts derived from a model. They are meant to show relative likelihood. ~18% ~79% About 2–3%: Unstoppable names become a standard-grade part of the AI payment stack. About 15–20% (with the initiatives above): The company establishes a real niche in agent identity verification and operations. About 75–80%: Web3 names stay in maintenance mode while DNS and AI-tool revenue grow. In practical terms, "surviving" in AI payments means being a profitable company on top of the standards, not being the standard. That is close to where the company is already heading. A counter-offer feature would streamline negotiations between buyers and sellers in domain transactions. It’s useful because: Buyers: could propose alternative prices without walking away, increasing deal success rates. Sellers: would save time by responding to offers directly within the platform instead of external communication. Platforms: would benefit from higher engagement and fewer abandoned negotiations.
